Now, I got a quick story for you.

I wonder if I'm the only person that this has happened to.

So a few months back, the family and I

00:00:20

went to the movies to see Moana 2,

and I had to get up mid musical number

00:00:24

to go use the restroom.

00:00:25

And afterwards I'm wandering through the hallways,

00:00:28

making my way back through the theater,

00:00:30

and I open the door and bam!

00:00:32

For some reason, Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Chris Evans

00:00:35

are trying to kidnap Santa Claus.

00:00:37

Matangi is nowhere to be seen,

00:00:39

and I had exactly zero idea what was going on.

00:00:42

Now, turns out I had walked into the wrong theater

00:00:45

and was in the exact middle of a different story.

00:00:48

Have you ever done this?

00:00:49

Or maybe for you it's streaming, right?

00:00:52

Maybe an inconsiderate family member

00:00:54

watched your favorite show on your account

00:00:56

without you knowing, and they're wrapping up season two

00:00:58

when you were expecting to be in the middle of season one.

Either way, the experience is disorienting, right?

Because you don't know where you are in the story

00:01:07

so you're not only confused, you're robbed of,

00:01:09

like, the weight and the power of the story.

00:01:12

It's like starting a book in the middle.

00:01:13

It's confusing and we miss out on what's really important.

00:01:18

Honestly, I think this is what's happened with Easter,

00:01:20

where we end up missing

00:01:22

something beautiful and important.

00:01:24

And I bet I'm not the only one here.

00:01:26

I think our our lack of context for the larger story

00:01:29

and jumping right into the middle of it

00:01:32

has robbed us of the beauty and the brutality of it.

00:01:35

It's like that and a few too many pastel shirts

00:01:38

and plastic eggs with candy in them

00:01:40

has just made us numb to

00:01:42

the most important story in our lives.

00:01:45

Now, I know I've been missing something here.

00:01:48

And when I randomly pick up any book,

00:01:50

or especially the Bible, and just jump into the middle of it

00:01:52

and read a specific verse or passage or story

00:01:55

without understanding how it connects

00:01:57

to everything that happened before and after it,

00:01:59

man, I miss out.

00:02:03

I don't want to jump into the middle of the story.

00:02:05

I want to understand how what I'm reading

00:02:07

and how what I'm living and experiencing

00:02:09

fits into the much larger and more important story

00:02:13

of what God is doing.

00:02:14

And really, that's what Holy Week is all about,

00:02:17

trying to give us our bearings and context

00:02:20

of how we're deeply connected to the story of God,

00:02:23

where we stand in God's story and, man,

00:02:26

that we can see it for what it is

00:02:27

and see God for who He is.

00:02:31

Recently, someone sent me this picture

And it's this visualization of how each verse

and chapter in the Bible points ahead to other verses

and refers back to others.

Not only is it just kind of beautiful,

it shows how the Bible isn't a series

00:02:48

of random, disconnected stories,

00:02:50

but how there's one deeply connected arc throughout.

You see, the Bible isn't just the stories

00:02:57

of what God has done,

00:02:58

it's the story of what God is still doing,

00:03:01

in ancient Israel and in my life and yours today.

So this moment is for you.

I might be prerecorded on a screen right now,

and you might be watching this alone or with family

00:03:13

or friends, but I hope that you hear me in this.

This isn't really something to watch

so much as something to experience.

This is designed to help you and I remember.

So before we go much further,

grab something to drink, something to eat,

maybe wine or juice or bread or crackers, whatever it is.

And with that being said,

we're just going to take a minute.

This is our chance to pause, to clear our heads,

00:03:41

to do our best to set aside the stress of our day

00:03:44

or the stuff on your to do list,

00:03:46

and focus our mind and our hearts on God.

God, help me regather my scattered senses.

Help bring to my attention

the beauty of what the Easter story means to me.

Now take a deep breath.

00:04:13

And then exhale slowly.

Let even your breathing be a prayer.

With each inhale, consider something that's on your mind.

And with each exhale,

00:04:29

let God take it off your mind for the next few minutes.

When your head feels clear,

00:04:36

just say something simple to God.

00:04:38

God, would You speak to me

00:04:39

and help me to remember Your story

00:04:41

in a fresh way right now?

That's nice, right?

00:04:51

Since we know that walking into the middle of a story

00:04:54

can be really confusing and just generally unhelpful,

00:04:57

and to see how deep this story goes into us,

00:05:00

we need to rewind.

00:05:02

We need to go way back from the end

00:05:05

all the way to near the beginning

00:05:07

in the book of Genesis,

00:05:09

where we are looking at the sacrifice.

00:05:13

There's this guy named Abraham,

00:05:14

and God does something that seems wild,

00:05:18

but it is the pre-Passover, and it sets the stage

00:05:22

for everything that we're going to be looking at

00:05:24

and experiencing with the Last Supper.

00:05:26

This is the sacrifice.

00:05:30

God tells Abraham that he is to go up a mountain

00:05:35

and to take his son, Isaac with him.

00:05:36

Isaac was the son of his promise.

00:05:38

It was not just his son, not just his firstborn,

00:05:41

not just his beloved child,

00:05:42

but it was also representative of his entire hope,

00:05:45

his entire future, his downline, his legacy,

00:05:48

and a sign that God was true to His Word.

00:05:52

God asked him to take a knife to all of that literally,

00:05:56

his hopes, his dreams, all the things

00:05:57

that he prayed for and wanted for his life

00:05:59

and for his children's lives.

00:06:01

All of that was going to be gone in a flash.

00:06:06

Take a second and consider what that would feel like.

00:06:08

Put yourself into the story.

00:06:12

It sounds insane, right?

00:06:13

And on some level,

00:06:14

it must have sounded that way to Abraham, too.

00:06:17

But he obeyed, believing somehow that God would make a way.

00:06:23

Abraham takes Isaac up on a mountain

00:06:25

and lays him on an altar.

00:06:27

And just as he raises the knife, God stops him.

00:06:32

God sees Abraham's faithfulness.

00:06:34

God saw a father willing to sacrifice his son

00:06:37

and his future.

00:06:39

And instead, God provides a ram caught in a thicket,

00:06:43

a substitute sacrifice.

00:06:45

God was testing Abraham's faithfulness,

00:06:48

and Abraham got to see God's faithfulness, too.

00:06:52

So no matter how we feel or how long we've been waiting,

00:06:55

we have to remember that God always, always

00:06:58

fulfills His promises.

00:07:00

Now hold on to that idea, because this, in essence

00:07:03

is the pre-Passover and it's foreshadowing something huge.

00:07:08

But to get there we have to fast forward again

00:07:10

about 500 years and a bunch of pages.

00:07:15

To the Passover in the book of Exodus. Exodus 12.

00:07:20

The people of God, they are stuck,

00:07:23

not just in a bad season, not just having a rough year.

00:07:26

They are stuck in slavery.

00:07:27

For 400 years they've been beaten down.

00:07:30

They've been trapped with no way out.

00:07:32

And they cry out to God.

00:07:34

They say, "God help us, get us out of here."

00:07:37

And God, He hears them, He sees them, and He moves.

00:07:41

There are plagues and all kinds of miraculous things going on.

00:07:44

But God speaks and He tells them, "Tonight.

00:07:47

Tonight I'm going to set you free.

00:07:49

And here's what you need to do to get ready.

00:07:51

Take a spotless and innocent lamb, kill it,

00:07:55

take its blood and paint it over your door frame.

00:07:59

Then eat the meal quickly because freedom is coming fast."

00:08:04

And that night, death swept through Egypt.

00:08:07

Every house without the blood of the lamb,

00:08:09

the firstborn son died.

00:08:11

But every house covered by that blood

00:08:13

was spared, was saved, was redeemed.

00:08:16

This was the first Passover where God's judgment

00:08:20

literally passed over the homes

00:08:23

of those who believed and trusted Him.

00:08:26

Here's something to remember:

00:08:28

that night every home experienced death.

00:08:30

For the Egyptians, it was the death of their firstborn.

00:08:33

But in the Israelite homes,

00:08:35

it was the death of an innocent lamb.

00:08:38

And after that Pharaoh, he couldn't take it.

00:08:40

He couldn't hold them anymore.

00:08:42

And they walked out of Egypt free

00:08:44

for the first time in generations.

00:08:47

Let that sink in.

00:08:49

God saved and freed Israel.

00:08:51

Where do you need God to free you?

00:08:54

Where do you need freedom from past mistakes,

00:08:57

from future fears, from addiction,

00:08:59

from just feeling the need

00:09:01

to make everyone happy all the time

00:09:02

or trying to make yourself happy all the time?

00:09:06

Remember, this wasn't just about that night.

00:09:09

God was setting up a pattern.

00:09:12

He was showing us that something bigger was coming.

00:09:14

He was showing us exactly what our freedom costs

00:09:18

and exactly what our freedom would cost Him.

00:09:22

So one more time, we're going to fast forward

00:09:25

again in the story, through 40 books, through 907 chapters,

00:09:30

all the way till we get to Jesus and the Last Supper.

Luke 22. This is what happened.

It's nighttime, and we're in a room

00:09:42

that might have looked something like this one.

00:09:44

Jesus was sitting with His friends

00:09:46

around a low table like this.

00:09:47

Maybe their back hurt like mine does,

00:09:49

but they're sitting there

00:09:51

and they're celebrating that Passover that we just came from.

00:09:55

Jesus is there too, maybe in the middle of the table

00:09:58

where He could talk with everyone,

00:09:59

with his closest friends.

00:10:01

Celebrating Passover, they're remembering.

00:10:03

Remembering back to that exodus,

00:10:05

to that night of the Passover,

00:10:07

that night that they made a rhythm

00:10:09

of remembering every year.

00:10:11

But this time Jesus does something wild.

00:10:14

And I keep using that word because really,

00:10:16

Jesus is flipping the script in huge ways.

00:10:20

Instead of just talking about Egypt and lambs

00:10:22

and plagues and doorposts,

00:10:26

He talks about them right there in that moment.

00:10:31

He takes the traditional Passover elements

00:10:33

and He says, "This here, this is My body broken for you."

00:10:38

He takes the wine.

00:10:40

He says, "This is my blood poured out for you

00:10:44

so that judgment would pass over you."

00:10:47

Think about how wild these words would have sound.

00:10:50

But again, within hours Jesus would be falsely accused,

00:10:55

would be arrested, would be convicted,

00:10:57

and would be murdered.

00:10:59

He was that perfect lamb, slain, whose blood was spilled.

00:11:02

Why? Because we are still stuck.

00:11:06

We still need freedom, not from Egypt,

00:11:08

but from our own brokenness and sin.

00:11:11

And this freedom is not coming in Egypt.

00:11:14

It's coming right here in our lives.

00:11:17

And our sin and our fear and our shame

00:11:18

and our anxiety and our addictions,

00:11:20

in the weight of our own lives, Jesus brings freedom.

00:11:25

And just like in Egypt, God says to us, "I see you,

00:11:29

I hear you, and I am here to set you free."

00:11:34

Jesus's blood, it covers us.

00:11:37

It brings us new life.

00:11:38

Those chains are broken.

00:11:40

Death passes over.

00:11:41

Freedom is here and Jesus has paid the price for it.

00:11:45

And if you remember all the way back

00:11:47

to those thousands of years ago

00:11:49

and hundreds and hundreds of pages

00:11:51

that started with Abraham

00:11:54

and God saw a father willing to sacrifice his son

00:11:57

and his future.

00:11:59

Way back here at the end of the story,

we're looking at the same thing.

00:12:03

Except God is the Father

00:12:05

who is willing to sacrifice His son

00:12:07

for our hope and for our future.

00:12:10

Isn't that amazing?

This is the story that you and I get to live into.

00:12:16

I want to fast forward one more time.

Past the last pages, past the end,

00:12:24

in fact, past the back cover to today,

00:12:27

to right here, right now.

00:12:31

Now, I'm doing this on a set that looks

00:12:33

a little bit like what a 40 year old Midwestern guy

00:12:36

thinks a cool first century tent would look like.

00:12:39

But this is basically a dining or living room, right?

00:12:42

It's where people gathered, where meals were shared,

00:12:46

where conversation was shared.

00:12:48

And this is really important.

00:12:50

For most of us, we think of communion

00:12:53

as something that only happens in a church service, right?

00:12:56

And it only happens when the pastor offers us the thing

00:12:59

and maybe we walk forward,

00:13:00

or maybe it's just like a little tin foil shot glass

00:13:03

with a wafer and a tiny little bit of juice.

00:13:07

There's something beautiful that happens

00:13:09

when we lean into the way that Jesus did it.

00:13:12

When Jesus set up this whole thing,

00:13:14

this whole set of tools to help us remember

00:13:17

He did it around a table.

00:13:19

Not just as a taste, but as part of a meal,

00:13:21

something that would fill us,

00:13:22

something that would sustain us.

00:13:25

That's what I want for you.

00:13:26

So, if you want to pause and do this with me right now,

your Easter meal with your family, or both, that's great.

It's good to have the extra rep

and the extra chance to obey Jesus's words

and remember that we are a part of this story.

And today we get to do what Jesus told us to do,

not just with our heads, not just with our hearts,

00:13:53

but with our stomach, and even with our taste buds.

00:13:56

We get to remember that God loves you so much.

00:14:01

So, first we're just going to say thank you.

Maybe something like this.

God, we thank You for the gift of this bread and this wine

00:14:10

and all that they represent, all that they represent

00:14:12

from the beginning of your story to the end of it to today.

00:14:16

That Your judgment passes over us

00:14:19

because of the innocent shedding of blood.

00:14:24

God, that You have created a way to make us right with You,

00:14:27

to restore us to You, to remove our brokenness and our sin.

00:14:31

We are grateful.

00:14:33

Help us to remember with every part of us

00:14:37

how loved we are by You. In Your name, Amen.

So if you're ready and you have your elements,

we take the bread as Jesus did.

00:14:47

And He said, "This is My body broken for you."

He said, "This is My blood poured out for you."

Take and eat and drink.

Jesus always, always flipped the script.

And in unexpected ways He showed up

00:15:34

to bring us healing and bring us hope.

This is your rescue. This is your exodus.

This is your new life.

Remember, you are not stuck.

Remember, you are not a slave.

00:15:53

Remember, you have been set free.

00:15:55

Live in it, walk in it,

00:15:57

and never forget what Jesus has done for you

or the story that you are a part of.
